As the dog days of summer come to end, we realize it’s that time of year again – back to school. As we get ready to head back to our college towns, we take a moment of silence for the summer filled of meeting up with our high school BFF’s  (and exes) and three months full of binge watching Netflix with no pants on (granted we do that at college too). Sure, we are excited to get back to school. We’ve missed Thirsty Thursday’s and being with our sisters 24/7. But sadly, college is not just themed Frat parties and late night runs to Taco Bell (okay well it kind of is). Thus, here are 7 ways to survive the upcoming fall semester: sorority girl style. (Insert hair flip here)

1. Purchase a new planner

tumblr_m748h0BgHa1qzvnuuo1_1280

One way to make heading back a little sweeter is treating yourself to Lilly Pulitzer’s 2015-2016 agendas. Whether you go with the Wild Confetti or All Nighter print, you are guaranteed to feel “s’cute” penciling in your school sched or saving the date for winter formal…yes, we know you are counting down already.

2. Shop till you drop

mall-shopping-bags-tumblr-riqcqo3a4

As as sorority  girl, we know the most exciting part of any event is picking out the outfit beforehand.  Add some staples to your closet like some maxi skirts or wedges to wear to your weekly chapter meetings or some new comfort color t-shirts to show off your letters to the PNMs. No matter what you wear from cardigans to yoga pants, rocking some new threads around campus will make you feel like a rock star.

3. Compare classes

tumblr_inline_mmi5xjDq1B1qz4rgp

Dreading that composition class that you are afraid to fail…again? (No shame!) Compare classes with your sorority sisters and friends to see if anyone is taking it too! Sometimes that boring Gen Ed can become a blast if you have someone to sit next to and copy notes from when you are drifting off after lunch. If you have no one you know in a class with you, come in on the first day confident and snag a seat next to someone and say hi! Just make sure they have good hygiene unlike the kid Cady Herron sat behind in Mean Girls. *gags*

4. Hit up an old flame

635565245198839323-1066222769_tumblr_m2fmhaZkt01qhwyt6o1_500_large

Haven’t talked to that guy you had a thing with after Greek Week last semester? Shoot him a text. Chat with him about his summer and plan a time to meet up when classes begin. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee between classes or catching a flick, rekindle that connection if the feelings are still there because you might regret it if you don’t! Plus it’s always good to have a date for formal planned ahead of time!

5. Craft like crazy

enhanced-buzz-22471-1367950195-3

There is no better way to decorate a dorm room or college apartment like some glitter and paint. Run over to Michael’s and grab a canvas, hot glue, and some rhinestones and let your creative juices flow. And if you’re like me whose walls already covered with Alpha Phi everything and hand painted Lilly prints, start crafting for your future little or surprise your big with some new masterpieces to show her how much you heart her.6.

6. Plan your Starbucks breaks

tumblr_lm36fgBCrn1qgh11mo1_500

Yes, you heard me. Go over your schedule and figure out when you’ll have enough time to squeeze in a Mocha Frappe or a Chai Latte between College Algebra and Gen Psych. Sure, this seems unnecessary now but you’ll thank me later when your brain is on low battery due to lack of caffeine.

7. Bond with your sisters

tumblr_inline_nia2x9KCmE1qjodxz

As if you won’t be hanging with them anyway prepping for recruitment, spend some more quality time with your sissy’s! Have a dinner night with some girls or tweak some last minute things for Bid Day. Nothing will get you more excited for another year of school than bonding with a hundred of the girls who mean the most to you!

Although the all night study sessions and early morning classes may get the best of you, just remember college just four years and not for life. Yes, it is stressful, expensive, and makes you want to drop out and be a stripper every once in a while but college is some of the best years of your life. It’s our last “hoorah” before adulthood, the last Saturday night before a week full of Monday’s, the last slice of pizza…okay I bet you get my metaphor by now. So make the most of it before we are all real adults with bills wishing we were back in college. Weird, huh?

Study hard and party harder, my friends and make this semester the best one yet.

Rushing any sorority has its ups and downs and like any sorority woman will tell you, we wish you the best of luck and hope you find your home. But don’t always put down the new sorority on campus because even if you don’t get to talk to the girl who will become your big during rush, you get to meet all the other girls who will become founding sisters with you and will form one of the strongest bonds of sisterhood you could ever feel.

Sorority Expectations

When you join a sorority, you never really truly know what to expect. You might think that it will be like the stereotypical sorority stuff in the movies and TV shows. Being in a sorority is not like GREEK. Ok maybe it is, but not to that extent. You’ll find that being in a sorority is a really rewarding experience. And here are the things that will actually happen when you join a sorority.

Sorority Expectations

10. Lots and lots of support. You will have so many friends and acquaintances that will be in your corner and be your personal cheerleader.

9. Dressing Up. You will start to dress up every Monday or whenever your chapter has their meeting. Yo will also start becoming well versed in themed outfits.

8. Going out with your sisters will always be the best kind of nights. Whenever it be partying at Frats or having a fun night, it will be special and cherished.

Sorority Expectations

7. You will learn the art of the sorority squat. When in a big group you will have no choice but to squat and look great doing it.

6. You will learn to craft. Your going to be crafting for your little/big and eventually just for fun. P.S beware of a Pinterest addiction.

5. Throwing the hand sign. Your sorority’s hand sign will be in practically every picture taken. You will throw what you know literally everywhere.

4. You will find that you’re relationship with your big/little will not be compared with anyone else. There is nothing like having a big/little in your life and there never will be.

Sorority Expectations

3. The Sorority house will become your comfort zone and your sanctuary. You are always there and you will always find sisters to hang out and have fun with.

2. Being able to feel so comfortable with your sisters and not feeling judged for who you are. These women will support you and be with you every step of the way.

1. Having fun with lifelong friends. When you join a sorority, you will meet so many ladies and you will share a special bond with them for the rest of your life. And who knows, some of these women might even be your bridesmaids someday.

An Open Letter to Netflix And Chill: YOU SUCK!!

netflix-and-chill

Dear Netflix & Chill,

Congratulations, in your popular existence since 2007, you have become partially responsible for ruining the concept of dating for our entire generation.

Notice I didn’t say entirely responsible, but you catch my drift. At some point, this term, Netflix & chill, became universally known as a far more subversive concept.

In that light, this hate note is written on behalf of every girl, myself included, who has been asked to “Netflix & chill” one too many times.

We all know what it means, and that Netflix & chill would probably turn into making out on the futon couch your mom bought for your freshman dorm room, while Daryl from The Walking Dead valiantly slays zombies in the background.

Ew.

Now as gross as the above mental picture might be, that’s not actually my problem with you, Netflix & chill. It’s the idea of you that disgusts me. Not only have you taken the place of a real dinner date and a good conversation with an individual you are interested in getting to know better, you have demoralized the idea of respectfully watching a movie with a girl!

The Hand Grenade Half Marathon Is The Premier Channel For All Sorority News Around The Globe.

There are many reasons why people from all walks of life visit the city of New Orleans Louisiana. Food, jazz, daiquiris, Mardi Gras, and a variety of traditions make it the best party town in America. We set up an interview with dedicated Tulane track athlete, John Mouton, had a little Mardi-party fun, and were educated on a more recently established tradition that may make our list of the top 10 most grueling, yet fun, activities we’ve ever heard of: The Hand Grenade Half Marathon.

Half Marathon

What is the Hand Grenade half, you ask? Travel down to the French quarter next time you’re in NOLA and pick up a famous Hand Grenade cocktail, which contains gin, grain alcohol, melon liqueur, rum, and vodka. Sounds pretty tasty, right? Now imagine drinking that out of a roughly one foot tall plastic cup, running a half marathon (Thats about 13 miles of cardio and drinking) at full speed through the streets of New Orleans.

Half Marathon

Students, athletes, (maybe a few crazy alcoholics), and many others make the trek to New Orleans each year for this event. Participants wake at the crack of dawn, about 9:00 a.m., and gather in front of the Tulane and Loyola University campuses. Participants are given beverages throughout the journey. As they reach the French Quarter, a Hand Grenade is purchased, consumed, and the expedition back to the campuses begins.

Half Marathon

This journey seems fit for a madman, and that’s why we weren’t surprised this event occurs in New Orleans, of all places. Local student athletes make it their duty to prove themselves and conquer this quest along with their other teammates.
True athleticism…

We sat down with John for a little Q&A to describe his Hand Grenade Half experiences with us, and needles to say, we are proud!

Q1: So, how did you find out about the Hand Grenade half, and what made you decide to do it?
A: The hand grenade half has been a Tulane track and field tradition since since ’08. Every track runner does it.

Q2: How did you prepare for the race? Does the Hand Grenade taste good?
A: We usually pregame at the house and prepare a backpack filled with beers to drink on the run. The hand grenade tastes AWESOME.

Q3: How do you feel physically and emotionally during the race? Is it fun? Do you pace it or are you in it to win it?
A:I feel physically dead but you don’t feel the pain after awhile due to the alcohol. The race is the best event of the year. My favorite day of the year at Tulane. It’s not really a race though. The team usually sticks together. Last year none of us finished because we got too drunk.

…sounds like a success!

Q4: Do you have a special ritual or tradition that you do to help you make it through the race or to give you good luck?
A: I Just drink as much as I can!

Q5: Is there a prize for the race winner? What’s the closest to winning you’ve gotten?
A: The only prize is glory. I won last year because I was the only one amongst my friends to finish. Everyone else was too drunk.

Half Marathon

Q6: Can most people hold it down or does the drink come up before you finish? Can you?
A: Most people hold it down. I always hold it down.

Q7: What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen happen during the race? Any fun outfits (or lack thereof), slogans, etc.?
A: The race is during Mardi Gras so everyone is out setting up for the parades in the morning…. anything can happen!

Q8: Are you proud you can survive that? Whose the winner out of all of your track mates that participate?
A: I am proud I can survive it because I run the 400m, which is not a distance race. There is usually a different winner every year.

Q9: How do your friends like the race? How do you all celebrate afterword?
A: With naps and/or more drinking!

Q10: Do you recommend people to try it at least once?
A: I think everyone who likes to run and drink should try this event.

Q11: How long does it take for you to start drinking again? It is Mardi Gras after all!
A: We rest up then go out to the parade later that night.

Q12: What’s your favorite memory about the Hand Grenade Half?
A: Each one gets better than the last. I’d say my favorite memory is putting a smile on the faces of the people of New Orleans as I drunkenly run by in my short shorts.

Half Marathon

There you have it! The Hand Grenade Half is truly an event to remember. Who doesn’t love a day full of cardio, cocktails, naps, and more cocktails?
The Half looks like an experience that is unforgettable for the students in New Orleans, and if you are ever in the neighborhood, why not give it a shot? You may end up sweaty and a little inebriated, but who doesn’t love the glory of conquering this physical feat? By the way our friend, John, described it, the journey is rough but the memories are worth it!

*We would like to add that Tulane and Loyola University are not directly affiliated with these activities, however the students who attend may participate if of age. We also want to add that these student athletes are all very dedicated to their sports and studies! (Not crazy drunks)!

10 Things Guys Want But Won’t Always Ask For

Relationships are a two-way street. Yeah it’s great when your guy spoils you by bringing you flowers or sending a sweet good morning text, but guys want to be spoiled back. Okay maybe not necessarily spoiled, but it’s good to remind your man that he’s appreciated too sometimes. I’m not saying buy him a yeti or a new watch, but just like girls, guys like the little things.

10) Back Rubs

After his long day of class/work, all he wants to do is lay in bed with you and cuddle. Something as small as a back rub will make him smile and wind down 10000 times easier. The intimacy will get him excited too.

anigif_enhanced-buzz-16684-1379369356-4

9) A Home Cooked Meal

Most guys are pretty lazy when it comes to cooking (If your guys cooks for you on the reg, marry him). And if it’s not laziness, then they don’t know how to make anything besides cereal. Guys can only eat so much Chickfila and McDonald’s in a week. Treat him to a home cooked meal like his mom would make after a long day. Even if it’s as simple as chicken and rice, he will appreciate the effort and the thought that you put into it.

101

8) Bjs

Needless to say, guys will be guys. No, the hormones won’t go away. Guys won’t always ask for it but if you put the offer on the table, it’s almost a guarantee that your guy won’t turn you down. Warning: it may lead to more

2

7) Sweet Texts

If you don’t have time in your day to plan an extravagant night out with your guy and you know he’s having a rough day, just send him a sweet text to bring him back down to reality. It will cheer him up and help him get through his stressful day with a smile on his face.

22

6) Date Night

Oh, the constant date night battle of “where do you want to eat” “I don’t care. What do you want” “I don’t care, you choose”…. Every guy’s worst nightmare. Take him out of his misery by planning a date night for the two of you. Pick a restaurant, make the reservation, and get movie tickets for a show you both would enjoy. And for bonus points, pick up the dinner tab and share your popcorn.

An Open Letter to Taylor Swift

Taylor. Girl.

It’s crazy to think you entered my world nine whole years ago. It makes so much sense, because I barely remember life pre-Tay. But it also makes me feel incredibly old. Looking at your first album, I see ten year old me taking goofy pictures and hanging up posters of Nick Jonas. Now, 1989 is one of two albums I always have in my car. I’m 19 and in college. I live 8 hours from home. But I don’t love you any less.

You’ve been with me since the beginning. I can’t begin to imagine surviving those awkward pre-teen years without you to PREACH my feelings. We’ve grown up a lot in the last nine years, but you’ll still find me jamming to Our Song in my car.

I love that you’re just as dorky as I am. Yeah, you’re BFFs with supermodels and you have the fiercest squad known to man, but you’re a total nerd and that makes me feel so good about myself. You’re unashamed to dance like a fool and put your heart on your sleeve: two things everyone should do more.next

What It’s Like To Rush The New Sorority On Campus

Rushing Greek life is basically a week-long holiday for some people. Actually more like a month if you include the month prior to when they buy their outfits, get interview training tips, meeting with ladies to get rec’s, it’s crazy none the less. So what is it like to go to college and fall in love with the sorority that hasn’t been established yet, or better known as “the new sorority on campus”? It’s everything and more you could ask for.

  • Your opinion about the sorority is based on the advisors you meet and the LCs from other schools you meet. You don’t see these women in the frat houses the week before boning beers, you don’t meet these women in your dorm hallway, you meet these women while they are gushing about their sorority and volunteering their time to share their joy and love for the sorority and Greek life.

  •  You define how the University and World sees your chapter. Those 70-300 women who chose to be founding sisters with you get to help make the reputation of that sorority known. It’s up to y’all to decide how the university perceives your chapter and what better power is that?

new sorority

  •  The traditions that that sorority has starts with you. There is no “this is how we’ve done it the past 50 years so it’s how its done”. It’s “This is our decision how to do it and how they do it for the rest of time” and one of the most exciting feelings ever.

  •  Going through recolonization on campus is one of the best sisterhood bonding events you could do. Some new sororities at schools aren’t re-colonizing but note that if they are, you will have a heck of a sisterhood afterwards. Every trial and tribulation that chapter goes through you all go through together and at the same time and there is nothing better than having all your sisters beside you to experience it.

new sorority

Alpha Delta Pi Delta Sigma Chapter Installation

  • Warning: the rest of Greek life will judge your chapter for the first month, but believe me, once they realize how awesome you and your sisters are they stop real fast. It’s hard being the new sorority on campus, just like being the new kid in grade school isn’t always easy, but when you have 70-300 other girls going through it with you, it makes it worth it.

  • A brand new house for you to fall even more in love with your sorority in. I know that it’s nice to have a house that already contains memories from past sisters, but just imagine what it can feel like knowing you’re the first class to live in the house, you get to make the memories and stories that will told 50 years down the road. The scratch on the floor that made them move the couch to cover it from the one night your sister came home a little drunk and you all had a dance party in your 6 inch heels? Yeah you were there for it, and it will be a funny story told for years down the road.
